It has taken me many months to share my thoughts about my Dad. Dad and I connected in so many ways. I cannot describe it in any other way besides just connecting with each other. One way that comes to mind is our way of approaching problems and resolving them in a reasonable and practicable manner. We always used the scientific approach to arrive at conclusions; however, this was interspersed with our faith when it was difficult to scientifically draw a conclusion to a problem. We had many conversations whereby he challenged me to analyze a particular issue and arrive at an appropriate conclusion through critical thinking.
WOW! How I benefited from his wise counsel.
Throughout the years we maintained a closeness that I cherished and valued more than he ever knew.
Being his daughter has been a privilege and honor. Your influence Dad will always remain with me.

Iam so sorry for your loss. I taught with Gene for many years at Clarion H. S. I taught biology right across the hall. Gene was one of a kind. He was always pleasant and always smiling and joking. He really cared for his students even though he expected them to work hard. I'm sure they all appreciate his efforts. He will be missed!

I remember Mr. Ochs very fondly as our chemistry teacher at North Clarion. His wry sense of humor was the greatest! We were half afraid of him but then he would break into a smile.

I opened the new Tylersburg Post Office in 2000. Gene was one of my first customers and immediate friend. I often joked that Gene and three other retired gentlemen came with my office, and I am thankful they did. I looked forward to his daily visits. I was honored to critique his life memoirs. My best memories will be our good natured arguments about which branch of the military was better, Navy or Army, so for today in honor of Gene I bow to the Army. Rest in Peace old friend.

Gene was one of the first we met when we came to this area and was facinating to chat with. Proud of the weather reports and his teaching. He came to see us and we loved his stories. He'll be missed by many. Our sincere condolences to family and Dan and Col Matt.

I remember my uncle "Gene" for
many things.... He was a great
teacher and had the patience of Jobe because I know that I must have driven him to distraction more than once...
He was my favorite school bus driver and often teased me as
I climbed into his "rig" with my DA haircut and white bucks.
He was always smiling and had
a propensity for good "dry humor" jokes. I remember many of his "old chesnuts" and often re-use some of them in my interface with others.
One of my last memories was the time I stopped in to see him and my Aunt Shirley when I had returned from a business trip to Buffalo. They were still very much in love and radiated it throughout that old house. Still lively and eyes twinkling with joy, Uncle Gene would put on his favorite records and we would sit, laugh, and talk about some of the fun we had.
I consider this a great loss to the educational community because of his wonderful ability to teach the sciences to people like me and still make sense of it all.

My interest in physics and chemistry and becoming a science teacher began in Mr. Ochs' classes. Wow, did I enjoy his teaching! Remember some great experiments we did and the fun we had. Even today, as a pastor, what I learned from him in science class was a foundation for my own confidence that science and faith are not at odds, but partners in this great universe God has given us in which to know and discover Him. And his own faith and teaching at St. Mary's confirm that he believed in a Crerator God! Thanks, Mr. Ochs, you are still a hero to me! Thanks too for being my coach as well.

Like Jerry said, from "Mr. Ochs" at North Clarion, to "Pappy", many, many years later, only because that was your nick name to others, and finally to Gene, but you were respected and loved by all, regardles which hat you wore. You will definitely be missed. I enjoyed the times that I visited with you and you always described your life to me via your Biography book.

To a great man and father-in-law: You started out as "Pappy" (behind your back) and Mr. Ochs (in the classrom.) In a few years you became Gene and thus remained for over 45 years.
If most folks could live the life you did with the committment you had toward Shirley, your kids and the teaching profession, what a better world it would be.

Grandad... you will be missed! You are in a better place.
It seems like yesterday, that we were collecting spring water from the woods or running around the back yard playing baseball or frisbee. The special moments were always on the porch asking us how school was going or how our careers were doing.
Even our own kids have developed those very same memories. Those memories cross generations and families and last a lifetime.
