Obituary of Donald Lee Bauer

Donald Lee Bauer, 75, of Falls Church, Virginia died Friday, December 3, 2010 at his residence after a long battle with metastasis cancer. Born May 11, 1935 in Lucinda, he was the only child of Bernard and Mary Alice Baumcratz Bauer, and they preceded him in death. Mr. Bauer married the former Mary Wolbert on June 18, 1960 at St. Joseph Church in Lucinda and she survives. He is also survived by his two children, Kenneth Lee Bauer and his wife, Pamela and their two children Paige and Olivia of Falls Church, Virginia and Bernard Lee Bauer and his wife, Celeste and their two children, Brandon and Alyssa of Fairfax, Virginia. Mr. Bauer was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Falls Church, Virginia. He was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking. He established D.L. Bauer Consulting LLC on December 23, 2004 and was the sole proprietor of that entity. He has provided technical and management assistance and advice to contractors supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory. He retired from Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) on January 14, 2005. While at SAIC, he was Corporate Vice President in the Engineering and Infrastructure Business Unit, responsible for activities in the areas of energy, security, environmental management and sciences, and technology evaluation. In 1994, he served as the SAIC Program Manager for the System Engineering and Integration activity on the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) for the Department of Defense. Prior to joining SAIC in January 1989, Mr. Bauer served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary and/or as Acting Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy in the Department of Energy from February 1982 until his retirement in December 1988. Responsibilities included the R & D for all Natural Resources (Coal, Oil and Gas), Management of the Naval Petroleum and Oil Shale Reserves, Strategic Petroleum Reserves, Implementation of this Nation's $ 5.0 Billion Clean Coal Technology Initiative, Operation of Great Plains Plant Post Partner Default. Mr. Bauer served in various positions in DOE and its predecessor Agency (ERDA) from 1976 until 1982. Between 1958 and 1976, Mr. Bauer served in the Department of Army, holding various military and civilian positions relative to tactical and ballistic missile defense of the United States at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. Mr. Bauer received his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Grove City College in 1958. He has served on numerous panels and has received numerous government awards including the Distinguished SES Executive Award and Meritorious SES Executive Awards from President Reagan; and DOE Secretary's Award, Meritorious Award, and Distinguished Career Service Award. In 1994, he received the SAIC Annual Award for Technology Development and Analysis. In 1988, Grove City College selected him as Top Technical alumni achiever for CY 1988. In December 2008, he was awarded the Washington Coal Club's Senator Jennings Randolph Lifetime Achievement Award. Friends and family may call on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 at the Borland Funeral Home, Inc. in Leeper. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at St. Joseph Church in Lucinda with Rev. William C. Miller, pastor, as celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to a charity of one's choice or to St. Joseph School in Lucinda, Pa.
