Charles Edward Byerly Obituary

Charles Edward Byerly ("Chuck"), 92, of Leeper, died Monday, May 5, 2025, at a daughter's home in Maryland. Chuck was born to the late Gertrude Catherine (Zalewski) Byerly and Charles John Byerly on August 16, 1932, in Lawrenceville, PA. He was married to Nancy (Early) on September 11, 1954, at St. Phillip Church in Crafton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, his siblings, Arthur, Theodore, and Clara May Byerly, and his grandchildren: Elizabeth Clara May and Isaac Philip Bradley Byerly and Victor (Ruby) Padden. He is survived by his sister, Grace Ann Byerly, his 10 children: Nancy Hahn (James), Susan McGee (Thomas), Jean-Marie Padden (James), Charles Byerly (Ann), Ruth Gerhardt, Audrey Byerly, Pauline Hoffman (Richard), David Byerly (Darla), LindaMay Schnell (DeWitt), and Robert Byerly (Viola); by 20 grandchildren: Jaimee See, Nicole Lea, Gregory McGee, Jenni Theleen, Ari Wolf, Nancy Padden-Mince, Rita, Victoria, and Veronica Padden, Charles ("Chad") Byerly, Caroline and Benjamin Gerhardt, Richard and Charlotte Hoffman, Julia, Rachel and Meghan Byerly, Jane Burkett, Paige Price, Lydia Byerly, and by 6 great-grandchildren: Alexander Torkeo, Delaney, Mason, and Michael McGee, Axel Theleen, and Colleen Padden.


Chuck lived his faith by serving as a young altar server at St. Kieran's Church (Lawrenceville) and as the chaplain's assistant during active duty. Chuck was a founding parishioner at Ascension Parish (Ingram), sang in the choir at St. Mary's (Crown), and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. He generously supported his children and grandchildren's Catholic school communities and Boy Scout troops.


Chuck served in the Navy during the Korean War on the Philippine Sea Carrier from 1951-1955. He worked as a Pittsburgh-based salesperson at Canada Dry and served as a supervisor at Mayview State Hospital and Western Center, where he blessed the residents with his unique care and concern. He retired to Leeper with Nancy in the early 1990s, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities with his family.


Chuck's life exemplified his unfailing practice of love, acceptance, and generosity towards all.


Friends and family may call on Monday, May 12, from 2-4 and 6-8 at the BORLAND ENSMINGER FUNERAL HOME INC. in Leeper, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at St. Mary Church in Crown with Rev. Michael Polinek, as officiant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
