Obituary of Donald J. Schill

Donald J. Schill, 68, of Lucinda, died Monday, June 8, 2015, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, after a short illness. Born May 29, 1947 in Lucinda, he was the son of the late Jerome M. and Alice E. Smrekar Schill. Don married the former Julie A. Gatesman on October 3, 1981 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lucinda and she survives. Don was a graduate of St. Joseph's School in Lucinda. He served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Alaska and Guam. He worked proudly as a machine repairman for Owens-Illinois Glass Plant in Clarion, retiring from there in 2005 after 37 years of service. Don was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lucinda. He was a member of the Cemetery Committee of the church and was an usher and lector. He loved his church and was so proud of the services and activities that it offered, that his final wish truly would have been to have memorial contributions made to the St. Joseph Church Window Fund. He was a "founding" member of Kelly's Breakfast Club in Lucinda, where he spent many mornings "solving the problems of the world" with friends and customers. He was a member of the Lucinda Antler Club and Fryburg Sportsman's Club. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, playing the lottery and watching the Pirates. In addition to his wife, Don is survived by a daughter, Samantha J. Wedekind and her husband, Scott of Aliquippa and a son, Frank A. Schill of West Point, Virginia. He is also survived by 13 brothers and sisters: Stephen F. Schill and his wife, Darlene of Leeper; Richard L. Schill and his wife, Mary of Lucinda; Diane M. Heasley and her husband, Daniel of Leeper; Linda A. Pinter and her husband, Robert of Erie; Joan E. O'Hare and her husband, Rev. Donald of Muse, PA; Kathleen S. Obenrader and her husband, Thomas of Leeper; Mary E. Lutz and her husband, Jerry of Lucinda; Kevin M. Schill and his wife, Verneada of Lucinda; Susan E. Beary and her husband, Richard of Lucinda; Timothy P. Schill and his wife, Stacey of Lucinda; Lisa J. Judy and her husband, Roy of Lucinda; Brenda J. Hoover and her husband, Scott of Lucinda and Patrick J. Schill of Lucinda. Don is also survived by the pride and joy of his life, his first grandchild, 9 month old Kaley Brynn Wedekind. Don was preceded in death by his parents. Friends and family may call on Thursday, June 11, from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Borland Funeral Home, Inc. in Leeper. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 12, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lucinda with Rev. Joseph Czarkowski, pastor, as celebrant. Co-celebrating will be Don's godfather, Fr. Paul Schill. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family requests memorial donations be made to St. Joseph Church Window Fund, P.O.
