Obituary of William A. Mertzeis

William A. Mertzeis, 86, of Tionesta, died late Friday night, December 19, 2014 at Golden Living in Shippenville after a short illness. Born April 25, 1928 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Karl W. and Dorothy Davis Mertzeis. He married the former Elizabeth J. Lloyd on April 27, 1951 at the 1st Christian Church in Munhall, PA and she survives. Bill served with the U.S. Navy during WW II. He worked for nine years in construction after being in the service and then for 32 years at J & L Steel in Pittsburgh. He was a member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Tionesta and enjoyed spending time with his church family. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by 3 sons: William L. Mertzeis and his wife, Debby of Tionesta; Terry L. Mertzeis and his wife, Robin of Catskill, NY and Scott T. Mertzeis and his wife, Candy of Eau Claire. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Charles. Friends and family may call on Tuesday, December 23, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Tionesta. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the church with Rev. Jonathan Bell, pastor of the church, presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church.
